Vascular Pathology Flashcards
Large vessel vasculitis
Temporal (giant cell) arteritis, Takayasu Arteritis
Temporal (giant cell) arteritis
Ophthalmic artery involvement, Flu-like symptoms, ESR elevated. Tx: Corticosteroids
Takayasu arteritis
Pulseless disease, aortic arch,
Medium-vessel vasculitis
Polyarteritis Nodosa, Kawasaki disease, Buerger disease
Polyarteritis Nodosa
String of pearls, NOT LUNG
Kawasaki disease
Asian children
Buerger Disease
Necrotizing vasculitis involving digits, Raynoud (vasoconstriction), heavy smoking.
Small-vessel vasculitis
Wegener Granulomatosis, Microscopic polyangiitis, Churg- Strauss Syndrome, Henoch-Schonlein Purpura
Wegener Granulomatosis
LUNGS, kidney, hemoptosis with bilateral nodular lung infiltrates. Serum c-ANCA levels, Necrotizing vasculitis
Tx: Cyclophosphatide, steroids
Microscopic polyangiitis
LUNG and kidney, similar to Wegener granulomatosis but p-ANCA
Tx: Corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide, relapses common
Churg-Strauss Syndrome
Asthma, Eosinophils, necrotizing granulomatous disease, p-ANCA
Henoch- Schonlein purpura
Vasculitis IgA, common in children, palpable purport on buttocks and legs, IgA nephropathy
Tx: self-limited but may recur; treat with steroids if severe
Hypertension
Primary, secondary (renal artery stenosis)
Atherosclerosis
Intimal plaque that obstructs blood flow.
Arteriosclerosis
Narrowing of small arterioles, Hyaline (benign HTN or diabetes) or Hyperplastic (onion-like appearance consequence of malignant hypertension)
