Vascular Disease Flashcards
Which patients will have >1.4 for their Ankle Brachial Pressure Index?
Patients with diabetes as they can have arterial wall stiffening.
What are the 2 possible experiences of patients with suspected lower limb peripheral arterial disease?
- Intermittent Claudication
2. Critical limb ischaemia
When is Clopidogrel recommended?
Clopidogrel is recommended as an option to prevent occlusive vascular events for people who have had an ischaemic stroke or who have peripheral arterial disease or multivascular disease
What are the features of re-stenosis?
- Sudden decrease in claudication distance
- Rest pain
- Features of acute limb ischaemia
- Ulceration and gangrene
What should be offered to every patient with intermittent claudication?
What are patients advised to do in this intervention?
Every patient with intermittent claudication should be offered a supervised exercise programme which involves 2 hours of supervised exercise a week for a period of 3 months.
Patients are advised to exercise to the point of maximal pain.
Which drug is recommended as an option to prevent occlusive vascular events for people who have had an ischaemic stroke or who have peripheral arterial disease or multivascular disease?
Clopidogrel
Which drug is recommended by NICE for the treatment of intermittent claudication?
What are the conditions for this drug to be recommended?
Naftidrofuryl oxalate.
Recommended only if patient do not wish toundergo revascularisation surgery and if exercise fails to improve symptoms.
What is the normal Ankle-Brachial Pressure Index?
1 - 1.2
What is the range of ABPI in Peripheral arterial disease?
0.5 - 0.9
What is suspected if ABPI is <0.5?
Critical limb ischaemia
What is the management of acute limb ischaemia?
Acute limb ischaemia is a surgical emergency requiring revascularisation within 4-6 hours to save the limb.
What type of medication is Naftidrofuryl oxalate?
Naftidrofuryl oxalate is a vasoactive drug
