Vascular Flashcards
What is ischaemia reperfusion injury?
Damage caused when blood supply returns to a tissue after a period of ischaemia, can lead to compartment syndrome (functional loss of muscle as a result of ischaemia).
What is venous claudication?
Pain and tightness on walking which is resolved with leg elevation, caused by chronic venous insufficiency.
What is the surgical management for varicose veins?
Endovascular treatment such as ablation, stripping or ligation.
Name some causes of chronic venous insufficiency.
Primary - congenital defects in vein wall or valvular component
Secondary - defect has occurred due to damage e.g. trauma, post-thrombotic disease, venous outflow obstruction (e.g. pregnancy)
