Anaesthetics Flashcards
What are the 3 main principles of anaesthesia?
Analgesia
Hypnosis
Muscle relaxation
Name a common agent used for induction of anaesthesia.
IV propofol (white stuff).
State 3 ways in which the airway can be controlled during anaesthesia?
Face mask
Guedel airway (oropharyngeal tube)
Intubation
Name an agent that is commonly used as a neuromuscular blocker during anaesthesia.
Suxamethonium
What happens during recovery of anaesthesia?
Change inspired gases to only 100% O2 Discontinue any anaesthetic infusions Reverse muscle paralysis Extubate once spontaneously breathing Give O2 by face mask
What are some side effects of propofol?
Respiratory/cardiac depression
Pain on injection (through cannula)
What are some side effects of opioids?
Respiratory depression
Decreases cough reflex
Nausea and vomiting
Constipation
Name a contraindication for a spinal block.
Anticoagulation - can lead to spinal haematoma which can compress spinal cord and cause paralysis.
