Triple assessment:
- clinical examination
- imaging (US if younger, mammogram if older)
- biopsy
What is a fibroadenoma?
Known as the ‘breast mouse’ it is the most common benign breast lump, highly mobile, discrete and non-tender lump caused by benign overgrowth of a breast lobule.
What is the definitive management for a fibroadenoma of the breast?
Surgical excision if symptomatic or concern over diagnosis or cosmetics, otherwise conservative management.
What is a breast cyst?
Fluid filled lump in the breast that can e painful, often associated with fibrocystic disease. Can be aspirated to remove lump and examine contents.
What is fibrocystic disease?
Condition where breast inflammation, swelling and lumpiness is associated with the menstrual cycle, women experience cyclical pain and swelling. Can also be a side effect of some contraception.
What is a lipoma?
Benign adipose tumour in the breast that is soft and mobile, usually asymptomatic. Only surgically removed if growing or causing symptoms.
What is a fat necrosis of the breast?
A breast lump caused by trauma, usually painless and sometimes hard due to fibrosis/calcification.
Which breast condition is associated with yellow-green nipple discharge?
Mammary duct ectasia/recurrent mastitis.
What is lactational mastitis?
Painful inflammation of the breast caused by bacterial infection of mammary ducts, may develop into a breast abscess. Associated with breastfeeding but there is not need to stop breastfeeding - it will actually help ease condition along with breast massage. Oral antibiotics needed and aspiration if an abscess develops.
What organism typically causes lactational mastitis and breast abscesses?
Acute staphylococci infection
What is mammary duct ectasia?
Recurrent mastitis - scarred and chronically inflamed mammary ducts associated with yellow-green nipple discharge. Associated with smoking.
What is a breast abscess?
Painful collection of pus in the breast, complication of mastitis. Caused by staphylococcal infection.
