Vascular Flashcards
What is ABPI?
Ankle pressure/brachial pressure
<0.9 suggests arterial disease
<0.5 is compatible with rest pain and necrosis
In whom does ABPI measurement not work?
Patients with calcified vessels e.g. Diabetics
What is duplex scanning?
Use of Doppler and ultrasound together to inform about vascular anatomy and blood flow
What are the symptoms of acute peripheral arterial occlusion?
Limb marble white, then mottled purple.
6 Ps
Causes of acute limb ischaemia
Embolism Thrombosis Dissection Trauma External compression
Management of acute limb ischaemia
Oxygen Heparin Analgesia Correct hypotension if present Embolus requires catheter embolectomy Irreversible ischaemia requires amputation
Aneurysm definition
Permanent localised dilation of an artery of more than 50% of the normal diameter.
Definition of ectasia
Localised area if enlargement of an artery by less than 1.5x
Definition of Arteriomegaly
Generalised enlargement of the arterial tree.
Aetiology of aneurysm
Congenital Degenerative (related to atherosclerosis) Familial Systemic dilating disease Infection
Risk factors for aneurysm
Male gender Caucasian Connective tissue diseases such as Marfans Infection e.g. Syphilis Dissection
