Various Drugs: pre/post assessments Flashcards
Antipyretics:
What age group always needs to be treated for fever?
Assess fever before / after
does this person need a med?
Always treat infant with fever
NSAIDS
Assess pain/ Inflammation. Be aware that some ASA (aspirin) causes decreased platelet aggregation as well so can thin blood, if platelet count is low… consider an alternate option for the med
Non Opioid Analgesics
Assess pain level before and after pain admin
Opioid Analgesics
What is the antiodote?
These meds bind to opioid receptors and serve to alter the response to pain causing a decrease in pain.
Be aware they affect LOC and RR.
Assess LOC and RR before and after admin.
If RR less than 8… give naloxone which is the antidote
Beta Blockers
Block the beta 1 receptor causing decreased HR and Contractility
Assess the HR before med admin (if less than 50, hold the med)
Ca+ Channel Blocker
Act on smooth muscle causing vasodilation in the vessel. Also affect HR so assess HR and BP
Vasodilator
Act on the smooth muscle (particiularily veins) to vasodilate. Consider the BP before giving, and monitor closely
Diuretic
Cause whole loss of fluid.
Assess BP, electrolytes, and dehydration
ACEI
Cause decreased Na+ and H20 reabsorbtion.
Assess electrolytes (can cause hyperkalemia) and BP
ARBS
Causes decreased Na+ and H20 reabsorbtion
Assess electrolytes (can cause hyperkalemia) and BP
+ Inotrope
Cause increase in heart contractility and decrease in HR,
Assess the HR
Antiarythmic Drugs
Cause increase in heart contractility (aiming to increase the blood that is ejected from the heart)
Assess the HR
Insulin:
- Rapid Acting
- Long Acting
Moves glucose across the membrane into cells to be used for energy.
- 10-15 minute onset, must have food before med is adminned. Assess BBGM before giving med (follow doctors orders closely)
- 1-3 hour onset, up to 24 hour duration. Assess for the Glucose level before giving med, and consider the duration of the med
non Opioid Analgesics: name 1
Acetaminophen
Name 2 NSAIDS
ASA, Ibuprofen
