Variations in Consciousness Flashcards
The Nature of Consciousness:
Internal & external stimuli
Awareness of EXTERNAL events
Awareness of INTERNAL sensations
Awareness of SELF
Awareness of THOUGHTS about these experiences
EEG
electroencephalogram - Monitors electrical activity of brain over time using electrodes attached to scalp.
Amplitude
Height of brain wave
Frequency
speed of brain waves (cycles per second)
EEG PATTERNS - BETA
normal waking thought
EEG PATTERNS - ALPHA
deep relaxation
EEG PATTERNS - THETA
light sleep
EEG PATTERNS - DELTA
deep sleep
CIRCADIAN RHYTHM
24 hour biological cycle
MELATONIN
used to realign rhythm when ignoring sleep
EMG
Electromyograph: measures muscle tension
EOG
Electrooculograph: records eye movements
EKG
Electrocardiograph: records contractions of the heart
Stages of sleep
Wakefulness
Stage 1: Non-REM, light sleep
Stage 2: Non-REM, spindles
Stage 3: Non-REM, deep sleep
Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep
REM VS. NON-REM
NON-REM - brain is quieter and slows down.
REM - brain is more active and we are more inclined to dream
REM rebound
effectively allows the brain to compensate for lost REM sleep. During REM rebound, a person needs less sleep to get into REM sleep.
Sleep deprivation
a condition characterized by inadequate or insufficient sleep sustained over a period of time
Insomnia
Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or early morning awakenings
Medical treatment: sedatives
Narcolepsy
Sudden onsets of deep sleep
Sleep Apenea
Mini-awakenings, gasping for air
Somnambulism
Sleep walking
REM Sleep Behavior Disorder
Dream re-enactments, person is able to move when they should not be
