Human Development Flashcards
Prenatal Period
from conception to birth, typically a nine month period
What are the three stages of the prenatal period?
- germinal stage (first two weeks)
- embryonic stage (2 weeks to 2nd month)
- fetal stage (2 months to birth)
What is developed during the germinal stage?
- the zygote through the fertilization of the sperm and the egg fusing together.
- the placenta when the fertilized egg implants into your uterine wall
What does the placenta do?
Allows oxygen and nutrients to pass into the fetus through the mother’s bloodstream and waste from the baby to pass through the mother
What starts to develop during the Embryonic stage
The baby becomes an embryo and the heart, spine, and brain begin to form.
What is the age of viability during the fetal stage?
Between 23-25 weeks, this is the age where the baby could survive if it was born prematurely
When is the baby most vulnerable to injury
embryonic stage
What is a teratogen?
any agent that causes an abnormality in the fetus during pregnacy
EX: Drugs, alcohol, chemicals and toxic substances
What is Jean Piaget’s theory?
His theory is on cognative development and how children develop intellectually throughout the course of childhood.
What are the 4 stages of Piaget’s cognitive development?
- Sensorimotor
- Preoperational
- Concrete operational
- Formal operational
4 stages of Piaget’s cognitive development?
Stage 1: Sensorimotor
From birth to 18-24 months old
the understanding that objects continue to exist even when they cannot be seen, heard, or otherwise sensed.
4 stages of Piaget’s cognitive development?
Stage 2: Preoperational
from 2 to 7 years
Relates objects and events to self and imagination develops
4 stages of Piaget’s cognitive development?
Stage 3: Concrete Operational
from 7 to 11 years old
the development of logical thought.
4 stages of Piaget’s cognitive development?
Stage 4: Formal Operational
from 12 to adulthood
Abilituy to use reason and logic
What was Kohlberg’s Stages of Moral Development for?
how children learn and develop a sense of morality
