Variables Flashcards
What is the independent variable?
The variable which we manipulate
What is the dependent variable?
The variable which we measure
What is meant by operationalisation?
Clearly defining the variable so that it is measurable
What are the 4 control variables?
Random allocation
Counterbalancing
Randomisation
Standardisation
What is random allocation?
Separating participants into groups using randomisation techniques
What is counterbalancing?
Used to overcome order effects when using a repeated measures design ensuring each condition is tested first or second in equal amounts.
What is randomisation?
When the materials used are random/in a random order
What is standardisation?
Procedures that are the same for all participants
What are extraneous variables?
Variables other than the independent variable which can affect results. If it is not controlled, it may change into a confounding variable
What are confounding variables?
A variable that is not the IV. To confound means to cause confusion.
