Hypotheses Flashcards
What is a one-tailed(directional) hypothesis?
When you predict your results will go in a certain direction
What is an example of a one tailed hypothesis?
People who have a good nights sleep will perform better in exams
When do you use a one-tailed(directional) hypothesis?
When there has been previous findings/research on the topic which you are investigating
What is a two-tailed(non-directional) hypothesis?
When the direction of the experiment is not predicted beforehand
When would you use a two-tailed hypothesis?
When there is no previous research to allow you to direct your hypothesis in a certain way
Give an example of a two tailed hypothesis.
There will be a difference between someone who has 8-10 hours of sleep vs someone who has less than 6 hours of sleep per night
What is a null hypothesis?
When there is no relationship between the topics in question
Give an example of a null hypothesis.
Question: Do cats care about the colour of their food?
Hypothesis: Cats express no food preference based on the colour
What is an aim?
Identification of the purpose of the investigation
