Validity Flashcards
Define Validity.
How reliable something is
What is Ecological Validity?
How applicable findings are to the outside world
What is Concurrent validity?
The amount of agreement between two different assessments
What is Population Validity?
If a study can only be applied to a certain group e.g. Students, Men, Americans, English etc
What is Temporal Validity?
A theory which may have been valid in a certain time period
What is Face Validity?
A concept which appears to be valid on the surface
How can we assess/ improve validity?
Control extraneous variables
Use Standardised Instructions
Use Counter-balancing
Eliminate chances of demand characteristics or investigator effects
State 2 ways to improve Face Validity.
Tweak questions
Allow external suggestions for changes
State a way to improve Concurrent Validity.
Replace parts of the questionnaire to find differences between original and previous research
State a way to improve Ecological Validity.
To avoid demand characteristics, use a single-blind where the participants are unaware of the aim of the study. This can cause investigator effects.
State a way to improve temporal validity
Replicate old research to reassess and assure validity through similarities in the results.
