van Emmerik & Kamphuis (2015). Flashcards
What is the Pennebaker writing paradigm, and is it effective in treating PTSD?
Short writing assignments about traumatic event without feedback or advice; not effective
What are the three phases in the therapeutic model of writing therapy?
- Imaginal exposure to traumatic memories (40%)
- Cognitive restructuring + coping (40%)
- Social sharing + closure (20%)
What does phase 1 entail?
Writing a detailed, first-person, present-tense account of the traumatic event, focusing on sensory experience and most painful facts and feelings
What does phase 2 entail?
Writing imagined advice to close friend who has experienced the same trauma on how to deal with it (adaptive coping, interpretation, positive reflections)
What does phase 3 entail?
Writing about trauma and its impact to close associate with clearly stated purpose and expected reaction; can be sent!
How does writing therapy (through imaginal exposure) lessen PTSD according to Ehlers and Clark’s model?
- Integrate trauma into autobiographical memory
- Facilitate retrieval -> modified appraisals
- Emphasise differences between stimulus configuration during trauma and safe situations -> closer match with present stimulus configuration necessary to be triggered
What 5 suggestions do Emmerik & Kamphuis have for writing therapy studies in the future?
- More studies of children
- More direct comparison to other PTSD therapies
- Outside of NL studies
- Military/ emergency groups
- Check which phase contributes most to efficacy
