validity Flashcards
what is validity?
the extent to which the test is truly measuring what we intend to measure
what to ask yourself when judging whether internally valid?
did the manipulaion of the IV cause the observed change in the DV?
what to ask yourself when assessing for face validity?
have you developed a good translation of the concept?
what is content validity?
your test’s ability to include or represent all aspects of the construct you are trying to measure
what is predictive validity?
assessing the operationalisation’s ability to predict something it should theoretically be able to predict
what is concurrent validity?
assess the operationalisation’s ability to distinguish between groups that should theoretically be able to distinguish between
what is statistical conclusion validity?
whether statistical tests are used that match the research design, goals of the study, and formal characteristics of the data
whether they are applied in conditions under which the resultant Type-1 and Type 2 error rates match those that are declared as limiting the validity of the conclusion
what is a type 1 error?
a false positive
incorrectly rejecting the null hypothesis
asserting something tha is absent
supposed relationship/effect exists whe it doesn’t
what is a type 2 error?
false negative
failure to reject a false hypothesis
failing to assert what is present
