Validity Flashcards
1
Q
what is validity ?
A
- refers to how accurately a study investigates what it claims to and the extent to which findings can be generalised beyond a research setting
2
Q
what is internal validity ?
A
- concerns whether results are due to the manipulation of the IV and have not been affected by confounding variables
3
Q
what is external validity ?
A
- refers to the extent to which an experimental effect (the results) can be generalised to other settings, other people and over time
4
Q
what are the ways of assessing validity ?
A
- face validity
- concurrent validity
- ecological validity
- temporal validity
5
Q
what is face validity ?
A
- simple way of assessing validity
- involves the extent to which items look like what a test claims to measure
6
Q
what is concurrent validity ?
A
- assesses the validity by correlating scores on a test with another test known to be valid
7
Q
what is ecological validity ?
A
- whether the study is representative of the environment and therefore whether findings can be generalised
8
Q
what is temporal validity ?
A
- assesses to which degree research findings remain over time
