A
- they involve a set of written questions used to asses a persons thoughts and/or experiences
4
Q
what can the questions be in a questionnare ?
A
- questions can be either open or closed questions
5
Q
describe what a closed question is ?
A
- they offer a fixed number of response such as a yes or no
- they produce quantitive data such as numerical data
6
Q
describe what is meant by an open question ?
A
- they enable the respondent to answer in any way they choose
- they produce qualitive data
- best written by asking ‘how’ or ‘why’
7
Q
AO3
state the advantages of a questionnare ?
A
- quick +cost effective
large amounts of info can be gathered in a short period of time - lack of investigator
no researcher present - quantitive + qualitive data
- replication
standardised (same for everyone) so easy to replicate
8
Q
AO3
state the limitations of using a questionnare ?
A
- responses may not always be truthful
demand characteristics + social desirability - biased samples
certain types of people may be more willing to fill in questionnares than others so it may not be representative of a population - low response rates
- misunderstandings
ps may misinterpret questions
there is also a problem with leading questions + emotive language
9
Q
describe features of an interview
A
- it is a ‘live’ encounter
- face to face or on the phone
- the interviewer asks a set of questions
10
Q
what is a structured interview ?
A
- they are made up of pre-determined set of questions that are asked in a fixed order
11
Q
what is an un-structured interview ?
A
- when the questions develop as the interview takes place
- the interviewee is encouraged to elaborate and expand on her answers
12
Q
strength of a structured interview ?
A
- easy to replicate due to their standardised format
- format reduces differences between interviewers
13
Q
weaknesses of structured interviews ?
A
- it is not possible for interviewers to deviate from the topic or explain their questions so this will limit richness of data and limit unexpected info
14
Q
strengths of an unstructured interview ?
A
- more flexibility
- they can follow up points and are more likely to elaborate
15
Q
weaknesses of an unstructured interview ?
A
- may lead to an increase in interviewer bias
- researcher may have to sit through irrelevant info and drawing conclusions may be difficult
- risk that interviewees may lie for reasons of social desirability
