topical eg clotrimazole pessary + cream. oral fluconazole.
which thrush organism requires topical nystatin or oral imidazole
candida glabrata (5%)
what is trichomoniasis caused by
trichomonas vaginalis- sexually transmitted
symptoms trichomoniasis
vaginitis, bubbly thin fish smelling discharge
management trichomoniasis
exclude gonorrhoea. treat with metronidazole
BV symptoms
fishy odour discharge, vagina is not discharged and pruritus is uncommon
what is the vaginal PH in BV
> 4.5
what is the whiff test BV
mixed with KHcl on a slide- a whiff of ammonia may be detected. clue cells may be seen on wet microscopy
what happens to the bacterial flora in BV
overgrowth of Gardnella vaginalis, mycoplasma hominis and anaerobes
complications BV
incr risk pre term labour, intra amniotic infection in pregnancy, susceptible to HIV, post termination sepsis
treatment BV
metronidazole. or clindamycin cream.
