Vacuoles Flashcards
Where are vacuoles primarily found?
Primarily in plant and fungal cells.
How do vacuoles differ in plant and animal cells?
In plant cells there is usually one large central vacuole that takes up most of the cell’s volume. In animal cells smaller vacuoles are scattered throughout the cytoplasm
What is the membrane surrounding vacuoles called?
The tonoplast
What is inside vacuoles?
A fluid containing water, ions, nutrients and waste products
What is the central vacuole filled with in plant cells?
A solution called cell sap which contains water, enzymes, salts and sugars
What happens when vacuoles lose water in plant cells?
Loss of water reduces turgor pressure causing the cell to lose its shape within the cell wall.
How do vacuoles support the structure of plant cells?
In plant cells, the central vacuole helps maintain turgor pressure pushing against the cell wall to support the cell structure.
What role do vacuoles play in isolating harmful materials?
They isolate harmful materials and break down waste products.
How do vacuoles regulate the internal pH of the cell?
By storing ions that help maintain the pH balance.
