Actin Filaments Flashcards
Where are actin filaments abundant in the cell?
Just beneath the cell and plasma membrane forming networks known as the cortex.
What is the cortex and what role does it play?
The cortex is a network of actin filaments beneath the plasma membrane that helps resist deformation and contributes to cell rigidity.
What is the structure of actin filaments?
Long, thin fibers made of actin protein. Around 7nm in diameter
How are actin filaments organized?
They are organized into various high-order structures such as straight rods, bundles or 3D networks
What role do actin filaments play in cell shape?
They determine and provide structural support for the cell’s shape.
How do actin filaments allow for cell surface movement?
Through rapid polymerization and depolymerization, they enable the cell membrane to retract and extend.
What processes are enabled by actin filament movement?
Cell migration, cell division and uptake of materials
How do actin filaments assist in intracellular material transport?
They act as tracks to move materials within the cell from one location to another.
What is the role of actin filaments in muscle cells?
They work with myosin (protein) to allow muscles to contract and relax.
