Vesicles Flashcards
Where are vesicles located in the cell?
Found throughout the cytoplasm of both plant and animal cells. The are associated with organelles like the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
What is the structure of vesicles?
Small spherical-shaped structures with a lipid bilayer.
What is the composition of the vesicle’s lipid bilayer?
It has hydrophilic (polar) heads on the outside and hydrophobic (nonpolar) tails on the inside to avoid the aqueous surroundings.
What substances are contained inside vesicles?
Substances like proteins, lipids and enzymes
What is the primary function of vesicles in a cell?
They transport materials between organelles transferring proteins and lipids by fusing with another organelle or the cell membrane.
What is the role of vesicles in endocytosis?
They bring materials into the cell.
What is the role of vesicles in exocytosis?
They send materials out of the cell.
What other functions do vesicles serve?
Some vesicles store nutrients or chemicals for later use.
How do vesicles contribute to metabolic processes?
They help in anabolic and catabolic processes by breaking down larger molecules (via hydrolysis) or transporting materials to sites of metabolism.
What role do vesicles play in protein and lipid transport?
They carry proteins and lipids between organelles or to the plasma membrane for secretion or integration.
What processes are vesicles involved in?
Endocytosis and exocytosis
