Vaccination Flashcards
What is Passive immunity
What is Active Immunity
Introduction of antibodies from outside source, they are not replaced no long immunity. E.g Mother pass antibodies through placenta.
Stimulating antibody production by individual by direct contact to antigen. Memory cells made Artificial - immune after vaccination - harmless antigen.
General idea on vaccination
Contain antigen causing production of memory cells- immune. Rapid production of antibodies protects population. Need to be available, few side effects and train staff.
Herd immunity
Large proportion of population vaccinated to less pathogen passed on as people are immune. Essential as not possible to vaccinate everyone.
Why might vaccination not work
Pathogen may mutate changing antigen not recognized so no antibody produced as T cell don’t bind to them. Also some pathogen may be hard to reach live in intestines
