Vacants Flashcards
Vacant building is defined as
Is a structure that is considered to be completely unoccupied and all efforts to maintain The building in a livable condition have been abandoned
A interior attack is not mandatory at a vacant building as it is in an occupied building . What factors should the IC consider if going to implement an interior attack
1 current structural stability of the building
- Any know life hazard
- Size and location of the fire
- Verification of safe access to fire area
At large and or advanced fires exterior ops should be the primary tactical consideration
All vacant buildings shall be id and marked with a x inside of a box . This marking shall be
Square to be 18” x18”
Lines to be 2” wide
Lime green reflective type paint
The primary markings should be shall be
Alongside the front entrance of the building
If deemed necessary other places like fire escape roof bulkhead
Markings are tentative indicators cause conditions may change post marking
Determining method of attack wether interior or exterior may be made by the first arriving officer this general considerations are
- Any know or indicated presence of life in building
- Location and extent of fire
- Exposure problems
- Number of units responding on initial alarm
Proper size up is the most important for the OIC . in execution of the fire attack plan the same order of priorities apply as in firefighting in occupied buildings .this priorities are ?
Life
Exposures
Confinement
Extinguishment
LECE
What is the most important aspect determining the initial attack (interior or exterior ) in a vacant building fire ?
The structural stability of the building
When a vacant building is fully involved , place hose streams between the vacant and
Most severe life exposure
If life not endanger protect the greatest amount of property
Advantages of In-line pumping are
- Fast water on the fire
- Pumper in position for exterior stream
- Equipment on the pumper closer to the fire
- Shorter and faster hand line stretches
- Lower engine pressure required
- ECC in better position to observe operations and assist if necessary
Disadvantages of In-Line stretching
- Water supply limited
- It may not be possible to attain full pumper capacity
- Possibility of pumper blocking out TL or aerial
- If hydrant selected oos it might not be possible to proceed to next available hydrant ,because of being blocked out
- Possible damage to apparatus by falling debris
If placing a TL in a vacant lot to obtain complete coverage of the building this must be done first
The LCC and officer must survey the lot
Shoring is necessary
Boom should not be operated at right angles to to the chassis at low elevations .it should be operated at narrow angles over the front and rear of apparatus
When the roof is cut in a vacant building before leaving the scene RO should be placed where
Inside bulkhead
Outside the bulkhead as well as above the hazard marking on front of building
