V Speeds & ASI Arcs Flashcards
What is Va?
Maneuvering speed
The maximum speed where full, abrupt control movement can be used without over stressing the airframe.
What is Vy?
Best rate of climb
The speed at which the aircraft will produce the most gain in altitude in the least time.
What is Mmo?
Maximum operating speed expressed in terms of a decimal of Mach speed
What is Va?
The design maneuvering speed. This is the maximum speed for abrupt maneuvers.
What is Vfe?
This is the maximum flaps extended speed. On the airspeed indicator, Vfe is indicated by the upper limit of the white arc.
What is Vle?
Maximum landing gear extended speed. This is the maximum speed at which the airplane can be safely flow with the landing gear extended.
What is Vlof?
Lift-off speed. The speed at which the airplane departs the runway during takeoff.
What is Vlo?
Landing gear operating speed. The maximum speed for extending or retracting the landing gear if using an airplane with a retractable landing gear.
What is Vmc?
Minimum control airspeed.
The minimum flight speed at which a twin-engine airplane can be satisfactorily controlled when an engine suddenly becomes inoperative and the remaining engine is at takeoff power.
What does the yellow arc on an ASI represent?
The Caution Speed Range. This is the range in which the aircraft must be operated in smooth air only and without abrupt control movement.
What does the red radial line on an airspeed indicator represent?
The red line represents the Vne or Never-Exceed Speed. The aircraft must not be flown above this speed in order to not expose the aircraft to undue stress and possible structural damage.
What does the green arc on an ASI represent?
The Normal Operating Range. This represents the standard range of operating speeds where the aircraft may be operated and maneuvered.
What does the white arc on an ASI represent?
The Flap Operating Range. Within this range, any degree of flaps may be used. Operation of flaps above this range may cause damage to the flaps or the rest of the aircraft.
What does the top of the green arc/bottom of the yellow arc represent?
Vno or Maximum Structural Cruising Speed. Do not exceed this except in smooth air.
What does the top of the white arc represent on an ASI?
The Vfe or the Maximum Speed with Flaps Extended. Using flaps above this speed may cause damage to the flaps or the rest of the aircraft.
