V Shaped Valleys ❄️❄️❄️ Flashcards
What is an interlocking spur?
They are areas of land that alternate from either side of a v shaped valley
What are v shaped valleys ?
They are produced as the river erodes its bed.
The river erodes vertically producing steep valley sides.
What is the 1st step in forming a v shaped valley ?
The rivers discharge (amount of water in a river) is low in the upper course and so the river only has enough energy to erode downward
This is called vertical erosion
What is the 2nd step in forming a v shaped valley?
The valleys sides are slowly broken down through the weathering.
What is the 3rd step in forming a v shaped valley ?
The weathered (broken down) material is transported via gravity and rainfall towards the river channel. This process steepens the valleys sides.
What is the 4th step in forming a v shaped valley ?
The steep sided and narrow valley shape that is created is typical of upland rivers
