The Water Cycle Flashcards
Evaporation
The heat causes water vapour to rise into the atmosphere from the ocean
Condensation
The water vapour cools and condenses into water droplets which gather together to form clouds.
Precipitation
Once the water droplets become too heavy for the clouds to hold, they are released as rain in low, warm areas and snow in high, cold areas.
Surface water
(Overland flow)
Some rain falls on land and runs back into the ocean through rivers and streams.
Through flow
Some water sinks into the soil. This is called infiltration. The water then moves through the soil to the bottom of the slope. This is called through flow
Ground water
Some water moves into underlying rock. This is called percolation. The water moves through the rock to the bottom of the slope as groundwater.
Transpiration
Water vapour also evaporates from the damp ground and is released by the leaves on trees and plants.
