UX Pschology Flashcards
Perceptual Psychology
- Visibility (principle of proximity, principle of similiarity
- Audio
- Haptics (causal relationship)
Information Processing
= This is a cognitive approach which views the mind as a computer.
Input –> perceptual encoding –> translation process –> response selection and execution –> observed response
Distributed Cognition: analysis of cognition should not be limted tot he thinking indivudal, cognition could include mechanism outside the individuals brain
External cognition: how representations can perform computational offloading
Embodied cognition: mind & body, body & physical word are central in shaping our cognition
Memory & Learning
Memory: Input –> sensory memory (attention –>) short term memory (rehearsal –>) long term memory
(emotions influence memory)
Magic Number 7: adults can only keep five to nine objects in short-term memory
–> preferring recognition over recall
Learning: intentional and incidental (by product of interaction)
Desicion Making
= reflective cognition, which is deliberate thinking resulting in conscious beliefs (effortful, slow)
- -> expected utility hypothesis (weighting pros and cons to maximize ulity of a decision) or heuristics (igonoring some informations)
- -> avoid buyers remorse or analysis paralysis
- -> limit options, make them comparable and categorize them
= Intuitive cognition, immediate
Situation Awareness
selective attention = irecting awareness to important stimuli while blocking out unimportant stimuli
The gulf of evaluation and the gulf of execution = describe the gap that can exist between mental and physical states
gulf of evaluation: sytem to user, gap between what the system exhibits and the user’s ability to interpret it.
gulf of execution: user to system, gap between what the system offers and the intention of the user.
Errors
Human errors
- slips (inadvertently performs a wrong action), inattention/memory-loss
- mistakes (conscious errors that occur when there is a mismatch between a user’s mental model and the reality), misinformation
- -> principle of forgiveness (prevents users from making errors and minimizes the repercussions of the error)
- -> affordance (physical characteristics of an object which hint at correct use)
System errors (Informative messages, how to handle the error, friendly distraction)
