define uveitis and etiology?

A

inflammation of uvea (iris, ciliary body, choroid)

infectious: bacterial, viral like HSV, CMV, VZV, parasitic like toxoplasmosis, fungal

inflammatory:
seronegative spondyloarthropathies (ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis, IBD, psoriatic arthritis)
sarcoidosis, bahcet (oral and genital ulcers)

symptoms and signs?

A

pain, decreased vision, photophobia
ciliary flush (not conjunctival injection)
MIOSIS
hypopyon (pus in anterior chamber)

slit lamp: cells in anterior chamber, aqueous flare, keratic precipitates)

complications?

A

synechiae (appears as irregular pupil and puts pt at risk for glaucoma)
glaucoma
cataract

management?

A

admit pt
give anti inflammatory steroids
give atropine drops for mydriasis and pain relief and lower risk of synechiae formation
analgesic
treat underlying cause
