orbital vs pre-septal cellulitis Flashcards
pre-septal cellulitis define, causes, symptoms, investigations, tx?
cellulitis above orbital septum
causes by s, aureus, s. pyogens (GABHS)
symptoms of inflammation PLUS
no vision loss, painful eye movement, limited eye mobility, proptosis
high WBC and CRP
tx with antibiotics
post-orbit / orbital cellulitis define and etiology?
inflammation beyond orbital septum
caused by GABHS (S. pyogens)
spread from other areas of inflammation like rhinosinusitis/ dental infections/ pre-septal cellulitis
symptoms of orbit cellulitis?
inflammation: swelling, red, heat
painful eye movements
limited eye movements
decreased vision
proptosis
can become systemic: fever, chills, toxic-looking
management of orbit cellulitis?
admit pt
check WBC and CRP
consider imaging: CT/MRI head
give broad spectrum ABs (3rd generation)
vancomycin
if no improvement or there’s abscess: surgical drainage
