(notes rani) Self-Interest is not the only defining factor determining political participation, political behavior and political identity are crucial factors. Your political participation refers to how vocal or silent you are in expressing your political views.
(notes japun) As mentioned in Lesson 1.1, Thomas Hobbes said we need to control our innate selfishness. For Macionis, this is the specific function of politics, to distribute power, to set the societies’ goals and make decisions.
This refers to the encompassing characteristics shared by a particular population and this is what social scientists believe to be social identity theory. The main point of this factor is that your affiliation to a group gives you a sense of SELF, which becomes the reference to decision-making as opposed to independent/individual thinking.
Social Identification
This, in simple terms, is the behavior to help other people without expecting something in return.
Altruism
The main influences in concocting the Political Self are these:
(Extra notes) At an early age, you are already able to start learning the things you need to survive from these. These are the things you know about your culture. All these socio-cultural influences shape this identity of yours.
Family, History, Education and Social Media
This is one of the main socialization agents, they primarily influence you on how you form your own political views.
Family
Other than family, this also influences your political leanings. For instance, the martial law years made people realize freedom is an essential part of Filipino history.
History
This is one significant way of acquiring all our historical knowledge. Through this, we learn about history, but we can also accept ideologies that the educational system we belong to advocates.
Education
Lastly, this has ben one of the most prevalent and widely used political participation mechanisms in the 21st century. Almost everyone’s parents are on Facebook, most of us are even registered to more than just one SNS, such as Twitter, Instagram
Social Media
