Describe Urethral Syndrome + symptoms
urethral infection only - dysuria and urgency
Describe Cystitis + symptoms
urethra and bladder infected - heavy feeling suprapubically thats relieved by micturation
Describe Pyelonephritis + symptoms
kidney parenchyma infected - loin pain, fever dysuria, rigors and bacteraemia
How should you treat asyptomatic UTIs
No treatment unless pregnant or prior to urogenital surgery
Name factors that predispose a UTI
decreased fluid intake, VCR, neurological problems, infrequent emptying, catheter, Obstruction - stones, prostate, constipation,
Qualities of UTI bacteria
resistant to urea, can attach to the epithelium, breakdown the mucin, resistant to serum bactericidal
Causes of pyuria
UTIs, catheter, vaginal contamination, glomerula nephritis, nephropathy, tumors
symptoms of sepsis
decreased BP, increased HR, increased RR, increased temp, confusion, nausea, diarrhoea, liver function altered,
treatments plan for simple infections
antibiotics for 3 days, check urins 7 days after, if symptoms persist retreat
treatment plan for complicated infections
MSU then treat for 10 days,, check MSU 7 days after then 4 weeks after.
