UTI
2
Q
What can UTI lead to?

Q
Why is the urinary tract resistance to bacterial colonisation?
A
due to defence mechanisms;
- regular flushing during voiding removing organisms from the distal urethra
- vesicle-ureteral valves (doesn’t allow back flow)
- immunological factors
- mucosal barriers
- urine acidity (prevents bacteria multiplying)
4
Q
How does bacteria get in to the urethras then?
A
ascending colonisation of bacteria from urethra into bladder
5

Pyelonephritis
