Q

Why is the urinary tract resistance to bacterial colonisation?

A

due to defence mechanisms;

  • regular flushing during voiding removing organisms from the distal urethra
  • vesicle-ureteral valves (doesn’t allow back flow)
  • immunological factors
  • mucosal barriers
  • urine acidity (prevents bacteria multiplying)
