What are the 3 stages?
Pronephros, mesonephros and metanephros
What happens in Pronephros?
Kidneys develop in the cervical region during 4th week of gestation
Develops cranially to caudally then works back up itself
What is the point of Pronephros?
The pronephric duct extends from the cervical region to the cloaca driving the development of the next developmental stage
What is the urogenital ridge?
The region of intermediate mesoderm giving rise to both the embryonic kidney and the gonads
What is the urogenital ridge made from?
mainly mesenchyme
What happens in Mesonephros?
Develops in the lumbar region and functions for a very short timeThe mesonephric ducts develop caudal to the pronephric region
What forms an embryonic kidney?
Mesonephric tubules and the mesonephric duct
Why do the kidneys still need to develop?
No water conserving function in the mesonephros?
Why do we need to know about the mesonephros?
The mesonephric duct has important role in male reproductive development
What does the mesonephric duct sprout?
The ureteric bud which goes on to form the ureter and the collecting system
What is significant about the ureteric duct?
it induces the development of the true kidney
