- dipstick and UFEME is UNRELIABLE
urine culture may be polymicrobial due to prolonged catheterisation

what is pseudomonas aeruginosa
hospital - gram negative
management of cystitis and catheter associated UTI
^ lower UTI
PO antibiotics 3-7 days
catheter slightly longer course - min 5 days abx
management of pyelonephritis (infection of kidney tissues) and urosepsis
^ upper UTI
IV antibiotics - admitted
after 48h, PO abx if improving
7-14 days course
what is asymptomatic bacteruria
presence of 10^5 bacteria in urine culture - signifies UTI but patient is asymptomatic
what is the management of asymptomatic bacteruria
- common in pt > 65yo
no management required!
EXCEPT pregnant women & patients undergoing urological procedures
who will be on long term antibiotic prophylaxis
pt with recurrent UTI - affecting life quality
not recommended as resistance will develop
do u ever grow and test candida
no! unless pt is immunocompromised and has existing kidney problems, then grow repeatedly
