Using limestone Flashcards
what is limestone mainly made of?
calcium carbonate
what happens when limestone is heated?
it thermally decomposes to make calcium oxide and carbon dioxide
which metal carbonates decompose in the same way when heated?
magnesium, copper, zinc and sodium
what is thermal decomposition?
when one substance chemically changes into at least two new substances when it’s heated
why might it be hard to do some thermal decomposition reactions in class?
a Bunsen burner can’t reach a high enough temperature to thermally decompose some carbonates of Group 1 metals
what does calcium carbonate react with acid to form?
a calcium salt, carbon dioxide and water
what does the type of salt produced depend on?
the type of acid e.g hydrochloric acid=chloride
what does calcium carbonate react with water to make?
calcium hydroxide
what can calcium hydroxide be used for?
neutralising acidic soil in fields (it is an alkali) works much faster than powdered limsestone
calcium hydroxide as a test for carbon dioxide?
make a solution of carbon hydroxide in water (limewater) and bubble gas through it, the solution will turn cloudy if there is carbon dioxide in the gas. cloudiness is formed by formation of calcium carbonate
how is cement made?
by heating powdered limestone in a kiln with powdered clay
how is mortar made?
by mixing cement with sand and water
how is concrete made?
by mixing cement with sand and aggregate (water and gravel)
