Properties and uses of crude oil Flashcards
what are all the fractions of crude oil called?
hydrocarbons called alkanes
what are alkanes made up of?
chains of carbon atoms surrounded by hydrogen atoms
what are the first four alkanes?
methane, ethane, propane, butane
how many bonds do carbon atoms form?
4
how many bonds do hydrogen atoms form?
1
what does it means if atoms are saturated?
they have formed bonds with as many other atoms as they can
what is the general formula for alkanes?
CnH2n+2
if an alkane has 5 carbons, how many hydrogens will it have?
12 (2x5, +2)
the shorter he molecules…
the more runny the hydrocarbon is (less viscous), the more volatile the molecules (turn into gas at a lower temperature), lower temperature at which that fraction vaporises or condenses and the lower its boiling points, the more flammable
what fraction has the lowest boiling point?
the refinery gas fraction since it has the shortest molecules
what are gloopy, viscous hydrocarbons used for?
lubricating engine parts and for covering roads
