Properties of metals Flashcards
1
Q
what are the basic properties of all metals?
A
- strong but can be bent into different shapes
- good conductors of heat
- good conductors of electricity
2
Q
why do transition metals have lots of everyday uses?
A
- strength and ability to bend makes them useful for making into things like bridges and car bodies
- idea if you want to make something that heat needs to travel through e.g a saucepan base
- conductivity good for making things like electrical wires
3
Q
properties of copper
A
- good conductor of electricity (good for electrical wires)
- hard and strong but can be bent
- doesn’t react with water
4
Q
properties of aluminium
A
- corrosion-resistant
- low density
- not particularly strong but forms hard, strong alloys
5
Q
properties of titanium
A
- low density
- very strong
- corrosion resistant
6
Q
what metal would be good for plumbing?
A
copper- can be bent to make pipes and tanks, below hydrogen in the reactivity series so doesn’t react with water
7
Q
what metal would be good for making an aeroplane?
A
aluminium- strong, can be bent into shape, light
8
Q
what metal would be good for making replacement hips?
A
titanium- won’t corrode when in contact with water, light, not too bendy
9
Q
why are metals not perfect?
A
- some corrode when exposed to air and water (so need to be protected)
- metal fatigue-when stresses and strains are repeatedly put on them over time, metals breaking can be dangerous e.g in planes
