- provides things people want e.g houses and roads
- products used to neutralise acidic soil and acidity in lakes and rivers
- used in power stations to neutralise sulfur dioxide (cause of acid rain)
- quarry provides jobs for people and brings money into the local economy, leading to local improvements e.g in transport, roads and health
- landscaping and restoration normally required as part of planning permission once quarrying is complete
