using crude oil as a fuel Flashcards
why is crude oil used as a fuel?
because they burn cleanly.
give examples of types of transports that use crude oil
cars, boats, trains, and planes
other than for transportation, what else can crude oil be used for?
power and generating electricity
what are some disadvantages of using crude oil
- it is non renewable
- it releases harmful gasses and particles into the air
- it causes acid rain
most fuels contain carbon and hydrogen. when the fuel is burned the carbon and hydrogen are oxidised to produce carbon dioxide and water vapour. write this as a word equation.
hydrocarbon+oxygen—–>carbon dioxide+water vapour
some fuels contain sulfur. what affect can this have on the environment?
the sulfur will be released as sulfur dioxide. this will get into the air will mix with the clouds and create acid rain
we can reduce acid rain by removing the sulfur from the fuels before they’re burnt.what is a disadvantage of this?
- it is expensive
- it takes more energy
- it releases more carbon dioxide
what are some environmental problems?
- increase of carbon dioxide causes climate change-global warming- this then changes rain patterns etc
- the particles cause global dimming-25% less sunlight has been reaching the surface of the earth compared to 50 years ago.
