plant oils Flashcards
why can we extract oil from plants?
because some fruits and seeds contain a lot of oil
what can we do with oil from plants?
use it for food or fuel
how do you get oil from the plant?
- you crush the plant material between two metal plates and squash the oil out
- you can separate the oil from the plant material by a centrifuge or a solvent
what vegetable oils can be used as fuels?
- biodiesel
- rapeseed oil
- soybean oil
why are vegetable oils good as fuels?
they contain a lot of energy
unsaturated oils contain c=c doubble bonds.
they also contain long chain molecules with lots of carbon atoms
in term of doubble bonds, whats the difference between monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats?
mono-unsaturated fats contain one c=c doubble bond where as a polyunsaturated fats contain more than one c=c doubble bond
can unsaturated oils be hydrogenated?
yes- they are liquids at room temperature but can be hardened by reacting them with hydrogen in a nickel catalyst at about 60 degrees c
