USES OF METALS Flashcards
THE USES OF IRON, ALUMINIUM AND COPPER DEPENDS ON THEIR (…)
PROPERTIES
PROIPERTIES OF IRON
-WROUGHT IRON IS ALMOST COMPLETELY PURE IRON
-ITS MALLEABLE SO ITS USED TO MAKE GATES AND RAILLINGS
-THE MAIN PROBLKEM WITH IRON IS THAT IS CORRODES EASILY
PROPERTIES OF ALUMINIUM
-DOESNT CORRODE EASILY
-IT REACTSD VERY QUICKLY WITH OXYGEN IN THE AIR TO FORM ALUMINIUM OXODE
-A NICE PROTECTIVE LAYER OF ALUMINIUM OXIDE ON TOP OF ALUMINIUM ITSELF STOPS ANY REACTION TAKING PLACE
-BECAUSEZ IT DOESNT CORRODE IT IS USEFUL FOR PRODUCTS THAT COME IN CONTACT WITH WATER (DRINK CANS)
-ALUMINIUM IS MUCH LESS DENSE THAN IROIN, WHICH MAKES IT LIGHTER (USEFUL WHEN THE WEIGHT OF THE METAL IS IMPORTANT) SUCH AS IN BICYCLE FRAME AND AEROPLANES
PROPERTIES OF COPPER
-GOOD CONDUCTOR OF HEAT AND ELECTRICITY
-USED IN ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS AND WIRING AS IT HAS LOW RESISTANCE AND SO IS EFFICIENT AT TRANSFERRING ELECTRICITY
-IT IS ALSO USED IN HEATING SYSTEMS (UNDERFLOOR HEATING) AS IT ALLOWS SPEEDY TRANSFER OF HEAT TO THE SURROUNDINGS
HOW ARE ALLOYS MADE
BY ADDING OTHER ELEMENTS TO THE METAL (USUALLY OTHER METALS OR CARBON)
ALLOYS OF IRON ARE CALLED (…)
STEELS
HOW ARE STELS MADE
BY ADDING SMALL AMOUNTS OF CARBON AND SOMETIMES OTHER METALS TO IRON
