useful & excretory substances Flashcards
What is a transport system?
It is the systems that are responsible for the the transport of USEFUL substances as well as the transport of waste substances
What is a useful substance?
It is a substance that cells need for normal functioning, growth and repair of cells and cell tissues.
What are examples of excretory substances?
- water
- oxygen
- glucose ( dissolved carbohydrates)
- amino acids
- minerals
- fats
What is an excretory substance?
It is a substance that is produced by cells, it can be toxic and needs to be removed from the body before they can damage or harm cells and cell tissues
What are examples of excretory substances?
-Carbon dioxide (metabolic waste)
- urea *
-Uric acid*
-nitrogenous waste*
(made by the cells)
What is undigestable food?
it is food that can not be digested it is indigestible - poo
What is the function of the excretory or organs?
These are organs that remove harmful substances from the body.
List the excretory organs.
- skin
- lungs
- liver
- kidneys
What waste products does skin excrete?
- urea
- excess water
- excess salts
How does the skin excrete substances?
In sweat
What products are excreted by the lungs?
- carbon dioxide
- excess water
How do the lungs excrete substances?
in expired air
What products does the liver excrete?
-bile pigments
How does the liver excrete substances?
In faeces through the intestine.
What is the function of the liver?
it detoxes you, breaks down products that are harmful / ‘poisonous’ so that they are safe. (alchohol)
