What is blood?
Blood is a fluid liquid tissue that is made up of a mixture of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets all suspended in a water fluid known as plasma.
What is a tissue?
tissues are groups of cells that perform similar functions.
What is another name for red blood cells?
Erythrocyte
What is another name for white blood cells?
Leucocyte
What is another name for a platelet?
Thrombocyte
What is plasma?
- plasma makes up 55% blood
- 90% of plasma is made up of water
- 10% of plasma contains dissolved substances that are being transported
What dissolved substances does plasma trasnport?
- glucose
- proteins
- hormones
- nutrients
- waste products
- salts
- gases
what is the function of the blood?
- it carries absorbed food and nutrients
- it carries oxygen to the cells
- carries metabolic waste from the cells to the excretory organs for removal
- circulates hormone and heat (chemical messengers)
What is oxygenated blood?
this is blood that has passed through the lungs and carries a high concentration of oxygen to the body
What is deoxygenated blood?
Blood that has already delivered its oxygen to the body and now carries a high concentration of carbon dioxide
