Blood Vessels Flashcards
1
Q
What are the three types of blood vessels?
A
- veins
- arteries
- capillaries
2
Q
By convention what color are veins and what color are arteries?
A
veins = blue
arteries = red
3
Q
Arteries and veins have the same three layers, what are they?
A
- an inner edothelium
(single layer of lining cells) - a middle layer of elastic smooth muscle
- an outer layer of connective tissue
4
Q
What are capillaries made out of?
A
a single layer of cells and have a very small lumen
5
Q
why do capillaries only have a single layer of cells?
A
This allows diffusion of gases and nutrients to occur quickly
6
Q
What is the difference between the structure of an artery and vein?
A
Artery = thick outer wall Vein = fairly thin outer wall
Artery = small lumen Vein = large lumen
Artery = thick layer of muscle & elastic fibers Vein = thin layer of muscle & elastic fibers
