REASONS FOR PURGES
A
- Kirov was thought to be an enemy so after he was executed, Stalin set out purges for the party.
- accidents and economic under performance blamed on ‘wreckers’
- Red Terror during CW precedent for purges
- Stalin had made it to the top, then became paranoid about possible rivals

NATURE OF THR PURGES
A
- NVKD had targets for arrests. Forced those arrested to name others.
- Gulag state system of labour camps, 8 million in camps.
- beaten until confession.
- After Kirov, arrests focused on party members and government staff X following orders

A
- terrified everyone into obedience
- Bolsheviks who built communist party with Lenin were dead.
- loss of experienced left government and industry with skill shortage
- got rid of good miliatary workers, weakened the military
