- Scarborough Shoal standoff April 8, 2012
- Phillipino Navy Surveillance spotted 8 Chinese fishing vessels docked, found illegally caught clams, sharks, attempted to arrest Chinese fishermen, but were stopped by two Chinese maritime surveillance ships
- Military exercises near coast in May 2012
- July 2012, China erected a barrier at the entrance to the shoal, was turning Phillipino vessels away
- Philippine National Defence Secretary Voltaire Gazmin called China “the oppressive neighbour” and “the bully at our doorstep”
