How did the American people feel about the Treaty?
America only joined war in 1917. Did not suffer many loses.
Americans felt treaty was to harsh.
Wilson had helped Britain and France to become more powerful and rich at Germany’s expense.
USA favoured isolationism. USA should not get involved in European affairs.
Wanted a fair treaty that would guarantee peace in the future but opposite happened.
How did the politicians react?
Treaty was used to criticise Wilson by his rival party, the Republicans. Treaty had to be ratified by the Senate. Republicans argued that as the Treaty was not based on the Fourteen points, it was not in America’s best interests and they refused to ratify it.
Meant Wilson and America could not join the League of Nations.
How did Wilson feel?
He was devastated.
Feared harsh treaty would result in another war.
Toured America campaigning for America to join the league but that didn’t happen.
