Were British people happy to see Germany pay and why?
Yes. During the war Propoganda convinced British people that theGermans were barbarians, so there was little sympathy for them when they lost the war.
What was the loss to Britain from the war?
Civilians suffered food shortages. Almost every family lost a son, brother or husband.
What were common headlines in newspapers of the time?
“Hang the Kaiser” - whipped up the population even more.
What influence did the general election have on politicians?
Politicians campaigns were based on promises to be harsh to Germany.
How did the British people feel about the signing of the treaty?
The general feeling was that the treaty was fair but could have been much harsher.
How was Lloyd George greeted by the public on his return from Versailles?
He was greeted as a hero. People lined the streets outside the railway station, waving and cheering.
What parts of the Treaty was Lloyd George pleased with?
He was happy with parts such as the extra colonies Britain gained meaning the British Empire now covered a third of the globe.
Also German navy was now restricted so Britain could rule the waves without competition.
What parts of the Treaty was Lloyd George not pleased with?
He was concerned that the loss of German land and people to Poland would cause huge problems in the future, especially if those people were determined to be party of Germany again.
He felt reparations were too harsh. Britain would lose a trade partner.
