USA #3: Representation Flashcards
“Describe, in detail, groups that are underrepresented in the USA” (6)
One group that is underrepresented in the USA is women. This means that women have more of a struggle getting into Congress than men because it is a male-dominated environment that can be intimidating. Evidence of this is that in 2023 only 28% of the 118th Congress was female.
Finally, another group that is underrepresented in the USA is black people. This means some racist/ prejudice white voters may be less likely to vote for black people. Evidence of this is that there has only been one black president in US history, Barack Obama.
“Explain, in detail, why some groups are underrepresented the the USA (sexism, racism, incumbency effect, poverty etc)” (6)
One reason why ethnic minorities may be under represented is because of racism. This means that ethnic minorities face discrimination and prejudice from some white voters who are reluctant to vote for them. Evidence of this is that Barack Obama is the only non-white president in US history.
One reason that women may be under represented in politics is due to sexism. This means that woman may feel intimidated by their lack of representation and so may feel un-encouraged to stand for election. Evidence of this is that there has never been a female POTUS.
“Explain why some groups are overrepresented” (6)
One reason men are overrepresented in politics because of sexism. This means that men have traditionally been involved in politics and held key positions in high office. Evidence of this is that men have dominated the Presidency: no woman has ever served as POTUS.
One reason why whites are overrepresented in U.S politics because of racism. This means that the white majority has traditionally dominated, as other races have historically been enslaved or marginalised, and white voters nowadays may be reluctant to vote for ethnic minorities due to racism. Evidence of this is that there has been only one black President in US History, while the rest have been white.
