Definition of urticaria?

A

vascular reaction to skin characterized by wheals with surrounding areas of erythema

cardinal symptoms = pruitis and swelling of upper dermis

Definition of angioedema?

A

same pathogenic mechanism of urticaria, but involves deeper dermis and subcu tissue

cardinal symptom is swelling, mainly facial portion

The major effector cell in urticaria?

A

mast cell;

immunologic urticaria is antigen binding to IgE,

non immunological can induce histamine release through arachidonic acid metabolism, physical stimuli, etc. all of which cause mast cell degranulation
