What is Urticaria?
A
Hives –> Pale to red, well demarcated, transient, pruritic swellings/large wheals involving the dermis

Etiology of Urticaria?
A
- IgE mediated
- Complement mediated (Autoimmune)
- Physical (Dermatographism, induced by scratching)
- Idiopathic

Common causes of Acute Urticaria?
A
- Infection
- Meds m/c PCN
- Bites (bees/hornets)
- Idiopathic

What is Acute Urticaria often associated with?
A
Angioedema

How long does Acute Urticaria last?
A
- Individual lesions = <24 hrs
- Rash <6 wks

How is Urticaria treated?
A
- Antihistamines!
- Epi

How long does Chronic Urticaria last?
A
> 6 wks

What is Angioedema?
A
- Acute or chronic hive-like swelling of the dermis, SQ tissue, and mucosa
- Anaphylactic reaction with pain & burning (pruritis usu. absent) -can result in FATAL laryngeal edema
2 Types:
1. Mast cell-mediated (allergic reaction)
2. Bradykinin-mediated (ACE-I induced, hereditary)

- Epi
